The Business Education Tech Prep Resource Consortium came into being in 1992 when the Central

from the Carl D. Perkins Vocational and Applied Technology Education Act (VATEA) of 1990.
The California State Plan established Tech Prep projects including:
Now extended into a fifth full year, we are currently providing resources and assistance to any California educational
institution implementing and operating Tech Prep programs in the Business Education area. Ongoing activities include
staff development, technical assistance, and conference presentations. In conjunction with the CDE, consortium
staff have conducted symposia designed for local Tech Prep consortia that emphasize business.
Curriculum development efforts of the Business Education Resource Consortium include the following : Integrated
Performance Activities (IPA) and Program Sequence Guides.
Documents align with the Business Education Career Path and Model Curriculum Standards, including the Business Technology Core and the following career path clusters :
The IPAs which correlate to specific Business Education student performance standards were field tested with
consortium schools and referenced to appropriate academic frameworks, career preparation standards, and SCANS
competencies and foundations. Other document developed by the Business Education Resource Center are:
Outreach and Guidance Strategies
Workplace Learning Strategies.
To further promote the development of effective Business Education Tech Prep programs in California, Carl D. Perkins
Tech Prep Career Path grants were awarded, through the California Department of Education, to 20 secondary sites
throughout California. The Tech Prep Business Education Consortium provided extensive in-service and technical
assistance related to staff development and program improvement. In addition, Business Education Tech Prep Demonstration
Programs were sponsored at selected sites in 1994/95 and 1995/96 to conduct on-site visitations demonstrating their
replicable programs, and more will be conducted in 1996/97.
